This course sits in a vibrant forest of hemlock pine, red cedar and Douglas Fir. Half the fun of playing is the spectacular scenery one enjoys during a round, or the drive to the course. There are a variety of challenges, one being the longest hole #4, a 529-yard, par 5, requiring a tee shot onto a dogleg left fairway that sets up a blind approach to the green. Two strategically-placed ponds affect play on holes #7 and #9.

| As a visitor from Ontario, who hauled her clubs all the way to Gold River, I believe it was well worth it. The scenery is outstanding, the staff very friendly and the course.... very challenging. Definitely plan on making the trek again!! |

magical place to play a round of golf, Nov 03, 2004

| This is a golf course that is almost unheard of.In fact it probably is unheard of.I have been playing golf for 15 years, growing up on the great game in victoria b.c.Over the years I have played thousands of rounds of golf and by far the most memorable round I have ever played was my first round at gold river golf club.It wasn't that I shot a low round, it was just that the layout of the course, conditioning, and surroudings, was the most spectacular that I have ever experienced.I have been adicted to the game ever since I was 12 years old and have spent numerous hours looking for and playing golf in amazing locations. Some of the more notible courses include kokanee springs, castlegar, furry creek, galagers canyon, nicholas north in whistler, royal victoria, royal colwood, olympic view, cordova bay, crown isle, storey creek, and glenngary golf links which is another hidden gem on vancouver island. After playing golf for 13 years I decided to drive from victoria to gold river just to satisfy my curiosty. The drive takes about 4 hours and it is worth every minute of it.The best part of the drive is the part from campbell river to gold river which takes 1 hour.Being born and raised on vancouver island I can honestly say that the drive between campbell river and gold river is by far the most scenic drive on the island if your a mountain lover. The drive takes you on a well maintained paved road through strathcona park which is the oldest provincial park in british columbia. When you drive up to the clubhouse nestled against the trees, you start to get the feeling your about to experience a round of golf like you never have before. The clubhouse is not huge and does not include any brass faucets, automatic toilets,or annoying staff saying," would you like a towl sir or miss".I have played golf at courses with 15 million dollar clubhouses and I no from experience a fancy clubhouse has nothing to do with the quality of the golf course. The clubhouse at gold river is however a clean cozy little clubhouse with a very friendly staff in a beautiful setting surronded by forest, river and mountains, which sure beats subdivisions, four lane highways, and powerlines. My hats off to the maintenance crew of this course. It is common knowledge of golfers that 9 hole courses in the middle of nowhere that are basically unheard of usually have poor grass conditions, but this is not the case with gold river. It has some of the best greens on Vancouver Island and the course is built on several benches of land which drain very well.It is not a long course, but it is tough enough,so bring lots of balls. It has by far the best layout of holes I have ever played surrounded by 360 degrees of mountain veiws.Myself I do not like playing courses that have lots of long straight boring 440yard par fours. If you like that kind of course this is not the course for you. This course is all about spectactular elevated tee boxes, dog legs, and dramatic elevation changes on several of the holes. There is even a couple of places to drown a couple of balls if your not careful.I do not live in B.C. anymore and I worry about the little town of Gold river which is effected by the logging industry. If I ever won the lotto I would spend the money putting a back nine on this course and it is my wish that some day they do.I think if this course ever got that extra 9 holes and became discovered it would rank amongst the best courses in North America. If you decide to discover this course I would suggest getting a good weather forcast before you go and pick a sunny day so you can take in the magical surroundings.I played it the first time on a september evening where the course was in very good shape.I played it again in may of the following year and once again it was in very good condition. The next time I would like to go in january on a bright sunny day and take in the lower snow line on the surrounding mountains. If your ever around the lower mainland of B.C.on a golf vacation do yourself a favour and save this course for the grand fenale of your trip and discover the magic for yourself. For 20 dollars and one of the nicest drives in southern B.C. you can't go wrong. If you are like me who is always on the look out for the perfect golf course you owe it to yourself to try this course.Just remember it is the west coast of B.C. so pick a day free of rain and full of sun shine. It will be another couple of years till I get back to B.C. for a holiday and I already know which place is on the top of my list.I also noticed there was very little reveiws on this course, and that it got 1 star out of 5 but trust me when I say that is not the case, because if any course deserves all 5 stars it's this one.CHEERS TO THE MAGICAL GOLD RIVER GOLF CLUB! |
