Course Description
This club has five championship eighteen hole courses, plus a sixth Greg Norman-designed course is expected to open in December, 2000. These courses are located next to the mountains and provide many great views and elevation changes. The PGA Tour's Bob Hope Chrysler Classic is held here annually and is played on the Arnold Palmer Course. The Jack Nicklaus Private Course features multi-level fairways and difficult-to-read greens. In addition, there are several holes requiring blind shots. "Golf Digest" rated the Jack Nicklaus Private Course 35th among the "Top 75 Resort Courses" for 1992, and "GOLF Magazine" ranked it 91st among the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play In the U.S." for 1996. The Arnold Palmer Private Course is a somewhat traditional design. The fairways are rolling and have plenty of water hazards that will affect your shots. The TPC Stadium Golf Course is an architectural triumph of matchless beauty. It has an international reputation as "The Western Home of Golf in America." The course has generous landing areas, deep pot bunkers, and large, undulating greens. Inspired by the Scottish seaside courses, its design is rugged and dramatic. This course has hosted the 1986-1991 Skins Game, the 1987 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic and the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf in 1995 and 1996. The course is user friendly, but offers a test of target golf where accuracy is rewarded while errant shots are severely penalized. There are tiered landing areas, firm elevated greens, and jagged greenside bunkers. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 6th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. "GOLF Magazine" rated it 24th best under the 1998 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." "Golf Digest" also ranked it as the 16th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 18th best for 1997-98. In addition "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 78th among "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1997, and 91st in 1998. The Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course has played host to the 1992-1993 PGA Grand Slam of Golf and featured the Diners Club Matches in 1994-1996. "Golf Digest" rated the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course 91st best under the 1996 category of the "Top 100 You Can Play in the U.S.," and the 9th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. The Tom Weiskopf Private Course has stone bridges that give it a Scottish appearance. The course is traditional with many mounds throughout its rolling terrain, and water hazards come into play on nine holes. The greens are undulating, and the fairways are open. This is a user-friendly course compared to the other courses here. The pro shop number for the Jack Nicklaus Tournament and the TPC Stadium Golf courses is (619) 564-7170. The Jim McLean Golf School opened in December, 1996, and can be reached by calling (760) 564-7144.
