Course Description
This club has two distinct regulation eighteen hole courses. The Deer Canyon Course, formally a private course, was built in 1959 and purchased from the members, only later to be added to the Sonterra Development shortly after the real estate project opened. This traditional course, built on fairly flat terrain, features many beautiful large oak trees that can affect your shots, extremely small greens, and only a few sand bunkers located primarily around the greens. The Sunburst Course is a target course highlighted by many elevation changes, numerous sand bunkers in the fairways and around the greens, only a few trees in play, and very fast, sloping greens. The true challenge on this course is the sand bunkers which always seem to be in your line of fire. Shot placement is key to scoring well. The Sunburst Course's signature hole is #6, a 165-yard, par 3, requiring a tee shot from off a sixty-foot high cliff over a pond to the green below. The pond is fed by a creek that turns into a waterfall cascading down the cliff that is visible from the green. The key to this hole is selecting the proper club because the shot is downhill and there is nothing but trouble behind the green. Most of the fairways on the Sunburst Course are fairly narrow and only afford small landing areas. The Deer Canyon Course’s fairways are wider, but if you don’t hit a straight shot, you'll end up with attempting your approach shots from under the trees. While completely different, both courses offer their individual challenges.
