Course Description
This course is one of the finest public courses in the Southern California area. The course was built amid the scenic foothills that overlook the Pacific Ocean. Additionally, the terrain on this course always slopes toward the ocean, so plan on your putts to break a little more than they seem, giving at least an extra inch to your reads to compensate. The most difficult hole on the course is #16, a 405-yard, par 4, requiring at least a 200 yard tee shot over a barranca and up a sharp-breaking dogleg left fairway with out-of-bounds at the turn. Any well-struck tee shot hit to the right will find itself in play, but an approach shot of over 200 yards will be the result. The greens on this course are medium-sized, somewhat sloped and medium speed. However, any putt struck directly toward the ocean will have a tendency to be fast. All the fairways are lined by pine and palm trees, plus there is a standard cut of rough to contend with and out-of-bounds areas coming into play on many holes. William F. Bell redesigned his father's layout in 1957. The club always reserves three tee times each hour for walk-on players. The terrain is extremely undulating and loaded with elevation changes, resulting in many uneven lies. To make tee times you need to call the starter directly at (949) 361-8384. The 6,447-yard men's tee also has a ladies' course rating of 76.3 and slope of 126. The 6,114-yard men's tee also has a ladies' course rating of 74.8 and slope of 123. The 5,722-yard ladies' tee also has a men's course rating of 67.0 and slope of 113.
