This 9-hole course is par-3s and short par-4s, the longest being approximately 260 yards. The fairways and greens are usually in decent condition, though in the summer, as with most Arizona golf courses, the fairways are like hitting on parking lots. The most challenging hole is #3, a 270 yard par 4, with a bit of a dogleg left. The fairway narrows a bit approximately 100 yards out, with trees on each side. The rest of the holes are straight, with wide fairways.
The course, while 'low-end', is very relaxing - as an older course, the landscaping is mature, and there is plenty of shade on almost every green and fairway. Also, it is nestled along the Scottsdale Greenbelt ( a long city park), so it is not unusual to see people (individuals, couples and families) biking, rollerblading, or picnicing nearby.
The practice range is large, with a putting green and a chipping green nearby. However, the clubhouse is a dive - if this place served food, they might just get shut down, just from the quality of the bathrooms. The proshop is almost nonexistent. There are rumors of an imminent remodel, but that could be years away.
Overall, a decent, no-frills course at a good price (approx. $12 - 18/round, less in the afternoon and in the summer.) The people there, both customers and staff, are friendly and welcoming. If you are in downtown Scottsdale and looking to spend an hour at the driving range, or want to play a not-very-challenging 9 holes, you can do a lot worse than Coronado. Just make sure you have all the equipment you will need before reaching the course. |
