Foss Park Golf Course

Don�t let this course fool you! If you play it from the blue tees it is a formidable challenge. There are some holes with tee shots that require a 200 yard carry over water (some days into the wind!) As well as a 190 yard plus par three with ponds and rivers all around it. The greens are nice and the grounds crew really works hard at keeping them that way. There are some narrow fairways guarded by 100 year old oak trees all the way down to the green on each side. It really plays more like a 126 slope and I believe it is rated incorrectly. Bring your straightest drives here.

Vestavia Country Club
"Good Variety - Good condition"
While not a classic layout, this course has a pleasant amount of variety and is in very good condition. Designed in 1948, this course (like all of those in the pre-golf cart era) is very walkable due to parallel fairways. VCC is located on the top of Shades Mountain with gentle slopes on many holes. The course is short from the White tees (6200 yards) and much more challenging from the back (6800+). The front and back sides are quite different with the front having 3 par fives and straightway or gentle dogleg holes. The back has only one par 5 and numerous dogleg par 4's that require driving precision. Fairways are of medium width and good drives reward short to moderate approaches to the greens. VCC's excellent bent grass greens are the strength of the course. This is a private club and the course is maintained in excellent condition. The only remaining factor here is the spectacular views of the valleys and mountains below the course. In some cases vistas of 8+ miles can be seen.

"Worth The Trip"
I have played this course about 5 times a year for the past 5 years. I always enjoy the round. Being a high 80's, low 90's player the course gives me just the right amount of challenge and forgiveness. Could use a few more yardage markers but other than that it's worth the hour drive for me. Don't need to hit driver on really any hole, but most fairways are wide if you feel the need to let it rip. I had my best score at Cameron Hills teeing off with a 2 iron. Only a few greens have a server slope so putting is no problem here. Take the time and make the trip.
