I'm a 12 handicaper that plays this course fairly regularly. With all the rain last year, the course kind of got away from the staff and it suffered from way too much water. This year, the course is in excellent shape, especially the greens. They are running fast and true.
The layout is full of great risk/reward tee shots and a couple of reachable par 5's including the first hole. The layout of the greens are the best feature of this course, they are well contoured and shaped to provide challenging angles for approach shots. There are no blind tee shots anywhere on the course. Playing from the tips will require a player to hit driver about twice as often as what is necessary from the medal tees.
3 things stop me from giving this course 4 or 5 stars. First, there are two holes that are too gimmicky for my tastes. #4 is a short par 4 with a hazard and a very tall tree smack in the middle of the fairway about 230 off the tee and #17 is a 280 yard par 4 that is a 90 degree dogleg left. Both holes offer really no opportunity for a risk/reward decision which is what you want in short par 4's. You have to lay up on both.
Second, the community is really filling in and lining most holes with single-family houses or townhomes. I used to play there before the houses came and it was nice to look at, now it looks cluttered and almost urban.
Finally, the clubhouse facilities are underwhelming (although the practice facilities are adequate) and the staff can be prickly.
So if I could divide my review I would give course layout and playability 4.25 stars and atmosphere and facilities 2.75 stars. |
