University of Maryland Golf Course -- 4 stars if not 4 the 'modified' greens
Review by: Mike If it weren't for the greens, this would be a 4 or 4.5. Excellent clubhouse and locker rooms, course is well maintained. Hilly course that is longer than most, but not too long. No short par 4s here, save for two, one a blind dogleg left, the other a blind downhiller, both around 360 from the white tees. Most fairways bordered by very large, very old and very well established trees, but fairways not so narrow as to be unfair for average players, but you pay a price for missing the short grass. Water on several holes including a couple of tee shot carries. Greens relatively small, accuracy is important. 12 greens were modified in 2003 for better drainage. Modification basically involved digging deep grooves, about 1/2 inch wide, into the green and then filling them with a special silica sand. These troughs act like indented speed bumps and are impossible to putt well. While I am sure this was done with best intentions, it has essentially made 12 greens virtually unplayable. Hopefully grass will eventually grow over them or they will realize the mistake and fix the greens.

Laytonsville Golf Club -- Laytonsville
Review by: Mitchell This course was a cow pasture with greens on it 5 years ago, very easy, unkept, perfect for beginners and low handicap wannabes. The staff at Laytonsville have done a outstanding job remodeling the course, making it more challenging and more picturesque. The par 5's are all tough tee shots, a par 3 was converted into a 170 carry over a lake par 4 that you can score on if you don't get penalized for hitting to long out of bounds or to short in the water, really bold long ball hitters ignore the danger and attempt a corner cutting 230 yard tee shot that will place you a short pitch from a large green. You can score at Laytonsville but the treelined course holds much danger if you get careless, very freindly staff and great snack bar, check it out. The rates have gone up to $50 bucks, but worth it compared to a overrated and overpriced Blue Mash and Hampshire Greens closeby.
