Edna Country Club -- COUNTRY CLUB?
Review by: JOHN BROWN THE FAIRWAYS WERE A LITTLE LONG,BUT THE GREENS WERE DESCENT.SOME OF THE TEE BOXES WERE DUG UP BY GOPHERS AND THE NINTH HOLE HAS A TREE TO THE LEFT OF IT THAT HAS A SWARM OF BEES WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO BE STUNG.IF YOU HOOK OR SLICE YOUR SHOT ,YOU BETTER HAVE BROUGHT A BUNCH OF EXTRA BALLS AND TAKE A DROP,BECAUSE YOU WILL LOOSE YOUR DRIVE.O.B.GRASS LOOKS TO BE CUT WITH A SHREDDER AND IS LAYERED VERY THICK.BETTER HAVE GPS INSTALLED IN THE BALLS. FOR LESS MONEY,THE CUERO MUNI.GOLF COURSE IS ALOT BETTER BET,JUST WATCH THE TREES

Gus Wortham Park Golf Course -- Nice layout, good price
Review by: Puttster Only 3 miles from downtown, this course used to be the Houston CC. It was allowed to decay and then in 2003 the City took it back and has been upgrading it ever since. Unfortunately many fairways still have weeds in them, three greens are in desperate shape and the bayou that meanders through is nasty. But every month the course looks better. My guess is it will be back to 100% in 2006. The layout is excellent. The course has a good variety of holes without being quirky, except maybe the 247 yd par 3 16th. Only 6,100 yards from the blues but I usually score the same as at Houston Memorial, which is 6,600. One of the culprits is three consecutive par 5's all with OB to the right. It is an old-fashioned course, easy walking ($16.50 on weekends). It has all the practice facilities, excellent cheeseburgers and the weekend beer cart girls come from nearby UofH. Ball resellers hang outside the fence and you can almost get your greens fees back with good deals on used balls. The pro there excellent. Gus can be tough to get on Saturday morning but for the most part word of the improvements has not gotten out and you can walk right on.
