Rio Salado Golf Course -- Decent course, decent price
Review by: Craig This 9-hole course is a decent value, because the greens fee include a cart, and it good for 18 holes. If the fee was for 9 holes, no cart, it wouldn't be worth it. Rio Salado is an ok course, with wide, forgiving fairways. Just keep it on the fairway - the course is built around a wash (gully) and even if you can find your ball and play it from there, you just added 2-3 strokes to your score for that hole (unless you are a lot better than most of the golfers here, including me :) ). The biggest knock to this course are the large expanses of dead fairway grass. The greens are usually in decent shape though. The most challenging hole is the par-3 seventh. The tee and green are separated by a section, approximately 80 yards wide, of steep wash, and the base and sides of the wash are covered in stones. Large stones. If you hit a ball in here, just write it off. It's gone. That's not the only hazard, either. There are trees on each side of the wash - just to left-front of the green, hanging over the green, and in front of the teebox, a little to the side. And a bunker in front of the green. The clubhouse is ok. It is clean, with a small proshop and a snack bar that has irregular hours (it closes when the person running it decides business is too slow.) There is a large screen TV in the snack bar area, so you can sit down after a round and watch the pros show you how it is supposed to be done. The driving range is ok, though the tee area is too narrow for my taste; there is also a putting green and a chipping green, with a bunker to practice from, too. Overall, an excellent choice for beginners, with a little more length than many 9-hole courses.
