Maplewood Casino & Country Club -- Nostalgic Golf That's Fun and Fair
Review by: Ed Cassity At first glance this quaint setting will pull in any dedicated golfer. The large frame clubhouse and hotel stand the test of nearly a hundred years--visited by former Presidents and Heads of State....The golf course was designed by famed deigner, Donald Ross. The greens are small and putt fast and true. Most all putts break from the south to north. I found the 11 holes on the south side of the road to be the best. I especially enjoyed the par 3 11th. About 165 yds, the green was tiny and uniquely bounded with a raised horseshoe mogel. There's a couple 300 yard 4 par's that high handycappers will enjoy. The par 6, 660 yd 16th is likely the weakest hole on the course. I thoroughly enjoyed the round and would return anytime I'm in New Hapmshire's North Country. It's truly an "old-style" golf course and although barely 6000 yds, I highly recommend it. Historical buff's will love the old club house which was also a casino back in the Roaring Twenties. A sad structure sits adjacent to the 17th tee box. A remnant of an age long past, the crumbling train depot can be seen off to the left, hidden and tucked into the large trees. Although in great disrepair, this structure is unmistakable and speaks of America's past. It should be restored!
