Candlewood Valley Country Club

Featured Golf Course Review:
Candlewood Valley Country Club --
Review by: Ken Kusen The course is is very good shape. The pro? shop attendent was rude and the course manager was even worse. I would not return if the green fee was free. This used to be my favorite course. I moved away and returned after seven years to a disaster. Definately not professionally run. Ken Kusen

Country Club of Fairfield -- Seth Raynor's masterpiece
Review by: John Tilghman The course weaves among marsh, inlet, native grasses (the one exception, the ever invasive Fragmites) and of course along the Long Island Sound. An abundabce of water fowl floats and drifts on the breezes. One shot sails into the wind, the next with it or across. The poor weather, light rain and mist, enhances the feel. There is tone, an aura of subtle color more reminiscent of Scotland than a Connecticut spring: an array of soft, muted browns and hints of purple, yellow iris emerging from the edges of ponds all against the backdrop of Southport's impressive houses and the verticality of her harbor's tall masts. This is a splendid test of golf. There are blind shots, especially the redan, among the holes, but often with room for errant shots if luck is kind. The variety of shots called for, none of which appears to be similiar or cookie cutter, a trait of Raynor from which criticism might be leveled against others of his designs, is clearly not so at Fairfield. Indeed there are far more difficult courses, longer and more penal, but no one can sleep their way around. The experience can not be improved upon without stepping into the realm of Shinnecock, Agusta, Pine Valley or Pebble. Golf wins here, score secondary to the frshness of this old, traditional course and venue. For the everyday round,"golf in the kingdom" resides at the Country Club of Fairfield. Let the members rejoice in their good fortune and protect it for future generations.
