| Essex County Country Club -- "The Big Course on The Mountain" |

That's what noted golf writer Red Hoffman called Essex County Country Club many years ago. After a decade or so of mediocre conditioning, ECCC is now back on the list of NJ's best courses. A recent renovation by architect Gil Hanse has brought out the best and the beast of this old classic course. Where Tillinghast, Raynor and Banks created some of their better holes, Hanse has brought the course back to its original splendor, reshaping and restoring original bunkers, repositioning others, and getting rid of obtrusive growth of bushes, scrub pines, and out of place trees. The back nine is one of the best you will ever play. |

A good test of your all your golfing skills. Any lapse of focus will cost you strokes, but rewarded for good shots. Local rumor is that Ben Hogan took a 12 on number 15. |

it would be 5 stars if the green crew took better care and the county put more money in the course. Tee boxes can be sparse, and some greens need tlc.
Overall a nice day, btw rent a cart, its built on the side of a mountain and walking is tiresome. |
