This course's fairways are tree lined, and water hazards only come into play on a couple of holes. The signature hole is #6, a 349-yard, par 4, requiring an approach shot over a lake to a well-bunkered green. Warren Cantrell redesigned the course in 1960, followed by Jay Morrish in 1983. The Ben Hogan Tournament was held here in 1990.

One of the best in Texas - a hidden gem!, Jun 04, 2007

| I've played golf all over Texas on a regular basis, from Dallas to Austin to Houston, including some of the best country club lay-outs, including Austin CC, Barton Creek and Dallas Athletic Club, and Amarillo CC can hold its own with any of them. The course conditioning is excellent, the fairways are tight from the back tees, and the staff is great. Regardless of what Mr. Pickens from Dallas said (what, no handicap on file, yet you're a scratch golfer?), if you get a chance to play this course, do it! By the way, Austin CC and Barton Creek do NOT compare to Amarillo CC in terms of conditioning... |

Not as good as La Paloma and nowhere near anything in Austin, Jul 06, 2005

| This course is a typical early 20th century design...non-challanging fairways and easy greens. Also, due to the fact that the club property has been land-locked by several decades of established residential development and two major local traffic boulevards, there is no room for expansion or redesign.
La Paloma Golf Club, a new private course north of Amarillo Country Club and even two city-owned and operated municipal courses offer more of a challenge to the low-handicapper in Amarillo. I'd pass on this course unless you are a high-hadicapper or just old money Amarillo and a long-time member of Amarillo Country Club who does not desire a golf challenge.
