This course is a premier public golf facility owned and operated by Iowa State University. It was established May 12, 1938 by George F. Veenker, former ISU athletic director and football coach. Mr. Veenker had the idea to build a golf course on the ISU campus. He envisioned, and set in motion, a course to be built by the Works Progress Administration. Originally, a Perry Maxwell design, the course has since become one of the most talked about, demanding, challenging and penalizing golf courses in the Midwest. The hilly design has a creek that comes into play on some holes, including #15, a 420-yard, par 4, featuring a dogleg right fairway and requiring an approach shot over the creek. The fairways are tree lined, and the greens are well maintained. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 6th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996.

Great Value, Aug 26, 2004

A great course that will reward accuracy over length - many tree lined fairways, dips, creeks, etc. While you can hit irons off many tees, there are some definite fun risk to reward holes here (so you may want to bring a few extra balls). Definitely check it out - great deal for the price.

Played this course several times in the last four years. Unique layout that forces every shot in your bag. Play from the tips for a real thrill! Gets busy on the weekends, so play early.

I've been a member for 20+ years and have a preference for this course. This course seems to have several improvements since the review up top. A large pond with fountain was added to the long par 5 #3, and several new tee boxes have been added for both the long-ballers and the seniors. The course is a challenge for most, especially the greens and tight fairways, but it also provides a really enjoyable 'walk in the park' for many. The course is often busy with couples walking the scenic tract. Seems a lot of people enjoy the league play as there are ladies leagues 3 days, evening leagues on 4 days, and a couples' league on Sunday afternoons that we have joined. Good course for good players, who enjoy the game.
