Great Course Fantastic Fees, Aug 07, 2006

I love this course. The back tees make it a real challenge. The greens are very fast. The staff is helpful and with four sets of tees it offers a reasonable round for all levels of golfer. The total yardage seems short but the short par 4s are challenging. 9 and 18 are over 550 yards from the back tees. They also have a practice chipping area and practice bunker in addition to the driving range.

This course plays fairly short, however is a good challenge and great for a public course. The front 9 plays somewhat open, with few trees to negotiate. The back 9 is the opposite with nothing but trees and trouble.

"Best kept secret in Ventura County"
SCC is the best golf course I've played in Ventura County. Surprisingly, it seems to be the best kept secret as well. While it is not as immaculate as Sherwood Country Club or Spanish Hills, it's layout is superior. #17 is one of the most exciting par 4's I've ever played - in both asthetics and difficulty. The golf course is mature with lightning quick greens. I've heard that Fred Couples went to Saticoy when preparing for Augusta. Every par 3 and par 5 on the golf course could be a signature hole anywhere else. SCC's strongest course feature is the use of elevation changes - no blind shots. There are only 3 or 4 "average" holes. It's not a surprise that the USGA chose it for US Open qualifying. If you get an opportunity to play SCC, don't pass it up. I recommend playing with a member who knows which side of the green to target. Perhaps in the near future, I will be lucky enough to do somebody that favor.
