This club has two regulation eighteen hole courses. Guests are not allowed to play either course unless accompanied by a club member. Both courses are built on gently rolling terrain and feature fast greens and narrow fairways that have limited trees, but are lined by a thick rough. Both courses are kept in excellent condition, although the East Course is kept up to championship-level standards every day. One of the best holes on the East Course is #16, featuring a limestone quarry in front of the green that must be carried on the approach shot. The 1934, 1950, 1971, and 1981 U.S. Opens were played here. "Golf Digest" rated the East Course 5th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 8th best for 1997-98. It was also rated as the #1 "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and 2nd best for 1997-98. Other awards include "GOLF Magazine's" ranking of 7th among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995, 1997 and 1999, 9th in "GOLFWEEK's" category of "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997 and 1998, and 6th in the same category for 1999.

this is a "great course". However, there are many lesser known but equally great courses throughout Pa. The weakpoint of this course is the membership. All private courses have obnoxious members but merions has more and they are more obnoxious. So if you have the opportunity to play merion be prepared for more than a golfing experience.

What a Great Golf Course, May 31, 2005 |

Hugh Wilson’s masterpiece is one of the best golf courses in the world. The principals of the course are those of the great Scottish Links. The white faces of Merion, are some of the most amazing bunker work ever created on a golf course. The complex design to the course, makes it one of the most challenging courses you will ever play. Your driving has to be on, and the putting greens are small, with brutal fast breaking putts. Bobby Jones loved this course, and you can see some of the core architecture present on Augusta National.

Merion adds something to the game of golf that a lot of courses cannot do in that it eliminates the advantage of simply just bombing the ball down the fairway because it is a very short course and the green complexes are incredibly tough also once you get outside of the fairway you are dead. I think this will be an excellent site for the 2005 U.S. Amateur because they are lengthening it to 6925 which will add a large amount of difficulty while keeping it natural to the course.

Merion is the best course ever and the only course that can even compare is Pine Valley.
