Nice quiet short par 3, Mar 23, 2004

This is one of my favorite courses to go and play on the spur of the moment. The prices are reasonable and the course is usually in better than average shape. This course is a short par 3 and I usually play it early in the season to work on my short game.

This cousce is very beautiful. The course was carved out of a wooded area so there are plenty of trees. Plenty of wildlife. The course is easy to moderate in difficulty. I give this course a 3 star.

"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. The course can frustrate you if you expect too much too easily. This is what makes it such a wonderful place to experience the brilliance of Donald Ross. Del Monte Golf Course
"Del Monte -- Fun and touch -- old school"
Great course, classic layout, old style, just a wonderful golf experience. I've played Old Del Monte many times. It is a slightly shorter and yet just as fun older brother to several of the other Monterey/Carmel area courses. Oldest golf course west of the Mississippi River, it is close to the Monterey airport, close to hotels, and provides a wonderful, old-feel idea of what it was like to play on courses before big land movers shapped and sculpted the ground. It is fun to play, fun to hang around at the pro-shop/coffee shop. Just a really neat golfing experience.
