Nice layout for a good value, May 26, 2004

Lake Barrington Shores is little jewel nestled on wonderful rolling terrain in northwest suburban Chicago. This traditional, parkland style private course is not long, under 6400 yards from the tips, but it is tight, woven through the upscale residential complex, and is normally in excellent, private course quality conditioning. The greens are bentgrass and usually run about 10 on the stimpmeter. Tees and fairways are bluegrass and very well kept, although the rough could have a more defined first and second cut. Accuracy is at a premium as there are plenty of trees, well kept bunkers, and deep rough that will balloon your score if you stray too far off line. I give it a solid 3-1/2 stars, which would be higher but for: 1)the obvious lack of length and 2) the lack of forced carries over water hazards, which are all lateral except for one fronting the tee on #14

This is a great layout with some long par 3's. The fairways are wide but trees line many holes and you must be in position in the fairway to get a shot at the small greens. Speed of the greens is medium-fast. Greens and Tee boxes were in good shape but the bermuda fairways are dormant and not overseeded for the winter. Play is slower on Sunday's but everyone was friendly and helpful.

I love this course. Have probably played it as a guest about 8 times and every time I'm done, I can't wait to get back. Played it 2x last summer ('03), when there was a lot of rain out East, and despite that, still enjoyed it. Fairways are among the best conditioned I've ever seen. Greens are in great shape-- and not too big, so you get a lot of makeable putts, but there are a lot of subtleties to them. As for the layout, get your pars and birdies on the front 9 because the back is brutal. One is a straight out Par 5 and you think "this isn't too bad". Get off the tee straight on two. Four is a very good hole. 6 is a sneaky tough par4 dogleg left, and nine is a 450 yard par 4 (blue tees) that gets you geared up for the back. Not a bad hole on the back nine, plus it takes you out of the holes that wind through office buildings and puts you into wetlands. A lot of carry. Par 10-12 and you are ready for 13, a long par 4 with a 2nd shot carry to a green that is impossible to it and impossible to putt. The member I play with is a 5 handicap and he always says--"take your bogey and smile". 14-17 are no gimmes and 18 is a par 4 that demands a 250 yard tee shot, but this leaves you a 170-200 yard uphill approach from a downhill lie to a green that has more break than any other on the course. Clubhouse is nice, but doesn't seem big enough. I've been there on Summer Friday's and it always seems like they need more space. Food is awesome though.

The front nine is narrow and short. A good drive and a short iron to the green and you will score well. The back nine is a completely different course than the front. Long open fairways for the long hitter and you will need your long irons or fairway woods to get you to the green.
