This tight course, located on a hilltop overlooking the Apostle Islands, will more than likely be difficult for average golfers. The terrain features many elevation changes, so expect some uneven lies. Water hazards (four ponds) come into play on three holes. The signature hole is #9, a 383-yard, par 4, featuring water guarding the front and both sides of the green. An additional nine holes were added in 1995.

Great views, terrible greens., Aug 27, 2004

Enjoy the beautiful scenery because the greens are UGLY. Played the front 9 on 8/21/04 and left disappointed. $27 bought 9 holes of uncut, unrolled and marshy greens. Because the pins hadn't been moved in quite some time, a 3 foot radius of deep footprint depressions surrounded each cup. Although hitting greens in regulation is relatively easy on this short course, birdies and pars become a challenge as your putts bounce their way toward the cup on the shaggy, soggy putting surface. Just smack your putt in the general direction of the cup and pray the divots and footprints guide your ball into the cup. I don't know if the poor greens are a result of irrigation shortcomings or sloppy maintenance, but they are worse than any muni course you'll find. Practice playing uneven lies as the majority of tee boxes are not on a level plane. Fortunately there are other golf options in Bayfield that can't be any worse than Apostle Highlands.

If you want to see Lake Superior and several of the Apostle Islands from a unique vantage point, you must play this course. There are at a number of holes where you will want to stop for a minute and soak in the view. The course also has plenty of challenge. There are big changes in elevation, some tight fairways, and several challenging greens. Make sure to bring plenty of golf balls because the rough is dense north woods - it doesn't give back many balls. I'd also recommend riding, unless you're in mountain goat shape. I'd say this is the best course in a 75 mile radius of Bayfield.

Flowing Lake Golf Course
"Hitting the Ball at Flowing Lake Golf Course"
If you are up for the drive (depending on traffic, 1-1.5 hrs NE of Seattle), Flowing Lake is a very nice "short" course; there are no par 5s, and you can finish 18 holes in 3 hours. Tucked away in the scenic foothills of the Cascades, on a clear day, some prominent snowy peaks (Pilchuck, White Horse) are visible from several of the fairways. The course is hilly, there is plenty of water (to avoid) and you'll get some exercise "hiking" the 3rd and 12th holes. You'll know you've lived a clean life if your ball doesn't roll all the way back down the hill if you fail to drive the green on those two holes. The 11th is the wildest par three you'll ever play! I've actually t'd off on 11 using a putter - and landed the green!! No sense in me describing it; you have to experience it first hand. FL is low traffic with friendly staff and VERY reasonable greens fees; <$20 for 18 holes. Over the years, I have brought friends & business clients visiting Seattle (from all over the world) out there; never a dissapointment, always enjoyable.

Ramsey Golf Club
"Good Challenge"
Although Ramsey might not be in the best shape it is still a very challenging course with a tough layout. You can find yourself in trouble of pretty much every hole on the course if you don't hit it straight or know how to shape your ball. Take advantage of the easy start Holes #1 and #2 provide as the rest of the front can be a major challenge. The back 9 can be long but there isn't as much trouble.

Not a bad course. Nothing spectacular about it, but the people are nice the golf is laid back, and I get to pull out the drive more than a couple times.

Little Harbor Country Club
"Great Par 3"
This is a beautifully maintained Par 3 that has 2 Par 4 holes. The greens are considered the best in New England, and I completely agree. It's never too busy, and the pros are very friendly. If you are looking to improve your short game, this is the place to go.
