fast greens and blind shots, Apr 20, 2009

just played this course yesterday. Very challenging despite the 71.8 rating and 122 slope. disguised ponds replace fairway bunkers on several holes, and the greens are lightning fast, not to mention that there's not one green that offers a straight in putt of more than 3 feet. lots of blind tee shots on thickly wooded doglegs and STEEP downhills guarantee that someone will hit up on you unknowingly on a few of the holes. course is adequately maintained, though not as well as it could be.

It has been a number of years since I played here but I didn't care for the course layout and the conditions that the course was in. The number of time that I had played here I felt that a hard hat should have been part of my equipment for the day. Holes run side by side and I had to duck anumber of errant shots.

"Worth the trip"
This course is easily the best course I have played. It's on a par with Blackwolf Run and the other Kohler courses at a fraction of the price. This course has a spectacular setting. It winds up and around Iron Mountain, and is a marvel of course design. Despite the elevation changes, only one hole plays uphill. The holes are cut out of the mountain side and winding cart paths take you to the next level, and hole, until you reach numbers 9 and 17, both of which play straight downhill (as does 18, a 600 yard par five with 3 terraced fairways). The grooming is immaculate and each hole is separated from the others by woods or water. Even on a busy day it feels like you're the only golfers on the course. The staff is friendly and efficient and the course is nicely rangered. As you play the course, you will marvel both at the quality of the experience and the incredible engineering required during construction. Rates have been in the $50-60 range for the past several years and its the best golf bargain you can find. This is a course you could play every day and it would remain interesting. The fairways and greens compare with any PGA site. This is one not to miss.
