This course can be challenging and yet very enjoyable for intermediate golfers. The fairways are tree lined and narrow, and the greens are well manicured. Caddies are mandatory if you choose to walk the course. This course was redesigned by George Cobb in 1962. A remodeling of some holes was completed in 1989 by John LaFoy.

I loved this course and the club. The golf course has beautiful views of the valleys below and has very good variety. I played from the V tees and it was a good test of golf. One of the things I liked about this golf course (especially from the back) is that the golfer must be able to move the ball from right to left on some holes (#8 & #18) and left to right (#12 & #13) on others. It does not favor either a fade or a draw. The bent grass greeens are very fast and reading them properly is critical. On the front nine - you can let the shaft out and blast away at most of the fairways but on the back you need to hit it straight and position it properly on several holes to have a chance to approach. Due to its location on top of a mountain, this course can be windy, which is helpful in the hot Southern summers and adds complexity to certain holes (#14 short downhill Par 3).

This would be a great place to play golf on a regular basis as the views on several holes (#13) are spectacular.

Good Variety - Good condition, Mar 01, 2004
reviewer: John Crawford from Cincinnati Ohio
While not a classic layout, this course has a pleasant amount of variety and is in very good condition. Designed in 1948, this course (like all of those in the pre-golf cart era) is very walkable due to parallel fairways. VCC is located on the top of Shades Mountain with gentle slopes on many holes. The course is short from the White tees (6200 yards) and much more challenging from the back (6800+). The front and back sides are quite different with the front having 3 par fives and straightway or gentle dogleg holes. The back has only one par 5 and numerous dogleg par 4's that require driving precision. Fairways are of medium width and good drives reward short to moderate approaches to the greens. VCC's excellent bent grass greens are the strength of the course. This is a private club and the course is maintained in excellent condition. The only remaining factor here is the spectacular views of the valleys and mountains below the course. In some cases vistas of 8+ miles can be seen.

Golfable Golf Quote of the Day:
" I'm a golfaholic, no question about that. Counseling wouldn't help me. They'd have to put me in prison, and then I'd talk the warden into building a hole or two and teach him how to play. -- Lee Trevino "
