This well-maintained course is the oldest municipal course in the U.S. It was named to "GOLF Magazine's" 1995 list of "The First 100 Clubs in America." Built as a nine hole design in 1885, it was expanded to eighteen holes ten years later. Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Willie Nelson, Willie Mays, and The Three Stooges have taken turns hacking away on this legendary design. The layout is known for its long par 5's, particularly hole #2, which measures 620 yards. Despite this, it's a forgiving design with tree-lined fairways that are wide open, and large greens that are fast. Sand bunkers can be found on every hole. Several new highways have been cut through the course requiring some reconfiguration of the original design. Therefore, it is not comfortable to walk nine holes because the ninth green is located a long way from the clubhouse. Some players call it quits after hole #14 because it's closer to the clubhouse than #18, and to avoid playing holes #15 through #18, which are known as the "hill holes."

| Golfing in a city of 8 milliion+ means long rounds and worn courses, but you can't beat its convenience. The course is just a short walk from the 1 Train, which makes things easy for those of us who don't own cars. The best time to play "Vanny" is early weekday mornings. I have played 18 holes in 2 1/2 hours on a Wednesday but plodded through 6 hours on a Saturday. Try the back 4. They're fun! |

A Great Course For Beginners, Jun 25, 2004 |
| reviewer: AJ
from Manhattan |
| This course is great for beginners, which may explain why it can take so long to play the course during regular hours, especially on the weekends. The fairways are fairly wide, the rough is pretty light, and, although the greens can be fast, they are large enough and flat enough that you can play aggresively towards most of the holes. Although water comes into play on two holes, unless you mishit short and low you can easily clear these. There enough greenside bunkers to give opportunities to work on sand saves and a few fairway bunkers to present opportunities to work on picking it off the sand. If you can hit it over 270 and straight there are opportunities to eagle on several of the par 4's. If you want to avoid the crowds try going during twilight hours. If you do you'll find that quite often there is no one in front of or behind you so you can play through the whole course in less than 2 hours. |

| This is a fantastic golf course, not the best ive played in my life, but to good to be inside manhattan. Well kept, well organised, but too short yardage and very crowded during weekends. I rate it 3 out of 5 |

not forgiving, Apr 13, 2004 |

| I would disagree that this course is forgiving. Some holes are wide, but many are somewhat narrow. If you want a forgiving course, go to La Tourrette in Staten Island. |

Nice practice course, terribly crowded, Feb 26, 2004 |
| reviewer: Robert

| This golf course offers 18 holes, some of which are 'interesting', but most are far from challenging. It will offer you the opportunity to practice and the course is conveniently located for Manhattanites (take the 1 train to the Bronx). The course will take at least 5 hours to complete, although I usually end up near 6 hours. To many people and the resulting wait time are to be blamed for that, at least in the weekends (I never played during the week). |
