Sunset Hills Golf CourseSunset Hill Road
Brookfield, CT 06505
Small, beguiling greens, ski slope hills and broad expanses of gang-mown turf mark this 50 acre parcel of property, situated just a mile south of the town's center. If this course has a virtue it is that is easy to break 82 for most low- to mid handicappers, but a devil to do better than 78 and this, at less than 5000 yards over a nine hole course you play twice. The course's defense to scoring is five fold: 1). there is woods/ob bordering at least one side of all but two holes 2). the greens are tiny and hard to hit, yet sloped subtly enough to make pitches and putts an uncertainty 3). all, but two holes have a shot that is blind or semi-blind, making the line of play indefinite even for the experienced. 4). there are only three tee boxes that aren't hardscrabble n' dirt. 5). the course has large elevation changes that angle and slope capricously away from targets and send near-misses careening from par saves to bogey or worse. Of course, the "give-back" is that at 5000 yards, you can play with six clubs and shoot about the same as you would with fourteen. Also, there is but one bunker left from the four I knew thirty years ago, so that along with the fact that water only comes into play on two holes makes for an overall absence of hazards to play - if you can navigate the bounces with well-distanced shots, you'll have a satisfying score. This may not be good for the owner, but this is the ultimate course to play if you can play weekdays before 3pm because...there is NO ONE THERE. Once three comes, you have both high school and nite leagues competing for the Ol' Course (as we call it). I haven't been there on a weekend in many years, but I imagine it's crowded enough. You may not respect as I do, but if you play a couple rounds there, you'll see why it's a unique test of your golf.
