Dyker Beach Golf Course7th Ave 86th St Brooklyn, NY 11228 Phone: (718)836-9722Fax: (718)836-4063
This inner-city course is considered to be the best-conditioned in the city, which is amazing considering the 80,000 rounds that are played on it annually. The burnt out automobile bodies that used to confront golfers on several fairways are now absent. The wide-open layout has a nice mix of holes, including several dogleg fairways. Visual appeal comes in the way of the fairways' many trees and, on the back nine, some striking views of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, one of the world's largest suspension bridges. The course can be noisy because of the city streets that are adjacent to the course. There is one large lake on the course. John Van Kleek redesigned the course in 1935.

Nice Course, poor management, Sep 25, 2007

| Management charge my group for full price for what usually would be 3 pm twilight. September usual begins earlier twilight but Dyker Beach remained @ 5 pm. That's a joke for a public golf course. Sunsets before 7pm. You don't even allow you to bring your own water. Don't play here. Go to Staten Island or Long Island. |

Busy Course For A Reason, Sep 21, 2004

| Accessible from the subway (R train to 86th st. 5-10 min walk). First time I went to play was at noon on a Monday. I couldn't go out until 3pm. The following Monday, I made a tee time (which they charge a few dollars for) and it took just under 6 hours for 18 holes with a cart. Apparently, it's "always busy", and it should be because it's a nice course. It's well taken care of. Some greens are nicer than others but they're all large, fairly quick and have nice breaks. Bunkers come into play on every hole but #1. The course isn't too long. All four of the par 5's are under 500 yards from the back tees. Some of the doglegs setup some tempting tee shots but can lead to serious trouble if you don't nail it. All in all, very nice for a NYC course I can get to by the subway.... just expect a slow day. |

Great course for short hitters, Jul 31, 2004

| The bad old days are long gone. Dyker is in ok shape now... it's a real golf course with decently tended greens and tee boxes. Some hazards still aren't great -- with construction grade sand instead of fine white sand. The fairways aren't exactly lush, but you are always on grass (except Dyker beach golfers don't seem to ever replace their divots) which wasn't the case back in the 90s when whole fairways on the back 9 were barren hardpan.
It's a really fun layout for the short hitter -- with only two holes (the hndcp 1 and 2 on the course) that are just unreachable in regulation for the guy with a 225 yard drive. Here's a course where you can break 100, not lose too many balls, and feel good about your game, while being challenged at the same time. Every hole is unique and interesting except #1, which is a short par 4 to a bland green but it's a good warm up hole (and there's no driving range of any kind is maybe my biggest complaint about Dyker's set-up.)
It will be slow on a summer weekend 5 1/2 hour round would be normal. But all the NYC courses play slow on weekends.
Play late in the day, or off-season on a weekday and you own the place... that's the way to go -- cheaper too with twilight rates, great bargain.
And, it's a great course to walk. Not flat, but mildly hilly and the tees are very close to the exit greens. A truly pleasant walk.
I gave three stars in comparison to courses around the country. By NYC standards it gets 4 stars. |
