This extremely scenic course is a good test for all skill levels of golfer. However, the fairways are fairly open, and the greens are large. Water hazards (ponds and creeks) come into play on eight holes. The signature hole is #14, a 399-yard, par 4, requiring a blind tee shot, then a downhill approach shot to a small green that is guarded in front by a pond.

It's A Real Gem, Jan 15, 2010
reviewer: Doctor D from Ohio
I played here a couple months ago. In the midst of some very rainy periods. While the course had some soggy spots, (not different than others in the area) I'm told recent drainage improvements have had a big impact. Course is thouroughly enjoyable and challenging - even a bit tight. The new clubhouse is stunning. If (as per a previous reviewer) the Club was troubled by the burning of its old clubhouse, one would never know it from the current facility. It is class all the way and, in total, the CHCC may be the most appealing club membership target in the area. We will probably join once the weather makes it possible to play golf regularly.

CHCC dissapoints me time and again. On the course you must drive the ball well, but if you drive your ball out of bounds, you'll probably end up breaking someone's window. the course has horrible drainage problems on holes. Now that the club house recently burnt to the ground, the club is in troublesome times, but now they can actually build a real acceptible club house. Sorry CHCC.

HARD TO GET ON - GREAT TO PLAY, Feb 01, 2004
reviewer: Tar Heel Convert from Chapel Hill, NC
Course is a traditional style designed by Gene Hamm and renovated by John LaFoy in 1999. This is the only private course in Chapel Hill. Walking is encouraged and it is a great way to experience the course. Signature hole IS NOT # 14. It's # 10 which can require carry over water twice. Pin on this hole makes 3 to 4 clubs difference on second shot. It's a beauty! Only one hole without bunkers - the par 3 9th is about 175 uphill from middle tees. Out of bounds on many of the holes as the fairways rise and fall through a very established traditional and exclusive neighborhood. Greens are all large (with at least 6 different zones on each one for pin placement)and have many contours. Three putts are common - especially in spring and fall when the bent grass surface is kept very fast. Bring your thinking cap, but also bring your game if your fun comes from scoring well. It's not an easy course, but it's not Jack Nicklaus difficult either.
