Short, but has challenges and a pleasant environment, Feb 27, 2004

| Pickaway Country Club an old course, first 9 built in 1927, on rolling terrain. Holes all stay away from each other, no back-and-forth. You are safe from getting hit by a wild slice from one hole over. A second 9 built in the 60's is a bit more crowded, but with the maturing of trees is now more challenging. Because of it's age, and inability to lenghten holes in the existing layout, it does play short. Modern long hitters will have little trouble with drive and a wedge on most par 4's, maybe even driving a couple of them. but you gotta be in the fairway as pine trees along both sides will block your second shot. There are some longer, challenging holes, but the shortness of the overall course evens out the big hitter advantage. Par 3's are relatively long (except one) and interesting. The 2 from the original 9 (now #2 and #17) are always a challenge to hit the green. The small greens and close sand traps make it an interesting play for your short game. Playing there is very pleasant esthetically. It is just outside the city of Circleville, and has few homes and no businesses boardering. It's a quiet and pleasant way to spend a day. Nice clubhouse and porch for sipping a beverage after the round. Not much in the way of practice area, but there is one. Food was good, last time I was there. Pro shop is small but has most of what you would need. I enjoyed every round I ever played there. |
