This eighteen hole course offers greens that are undulating and extremely quick. Spacious sand bunkers come into play on most holes. The fairways are wide and rolling, however, lined with challenging rough areas. Hole #3, a 555-yard, par 5, stands out as the course's signature hole. Unique to the hole is a large, pre-existing boulder that menacingly rests in the middle of the fairway. Par is attainable. Large bunkers line the right of the green, while water guards the left side. Those who overshoot the green to the backside will encounter a sizeable slope.

Best public course in north Charlotte, but, Apr 16, 2004

This Dan Maples design is a classic central NC "mountain" track - The course ids always in good shape and very challenging - Greens are very fast when dry - Many changes in elevations between tee and green - Errant tee shots are severely punished by water and jungle rough - Beautiful layout - Very scenic - No houses on course - Only minus has been the staff over ht eyears - Not very friendly or helpful....

Rancho San Joaquin Golf Course
"This course helped my game!"
With it's many doglegs and elevation changes, this course will quickly teach the beginners how to setup their approaches, while giving the lower handicap players a reasonably challenging round. 5 of the first nine pins cannot be seen from the tees. If you spray your tee shots, you will surely be struggling to make par. The par threes are deceiving with two short downhills, and two 150-ish up hills. These have been my achilles heel. There are not to many water hazzards, but they are well/poorly place depending on your tendancies. They can easily swallow your ball if your not carefull. The traps are typically limited to wrapping the greens, but watch out for the 5th hole, with its deceiving horizontal sand at 230 yards out. The grounds are well kept with mid speed greens that exactly match the practice green. Prepare for an even mix of wide and narrow fairways, and many misleading doglegs, both slight and sharp. This course has made me a better golfer, and I can't say that about many. Enjoy!

"Lastest Updates"
I've been a member for 20+ years and have a preference for this course. This course seems to have several improvements since the review up top. A large pond with fountain was added to the long par 5 #3, and several new tee boxes have been added for both the long-ballers and the seniors. The course is a challenge for most, especially the greens and tight fairways, but it also provides a really enjoyable 'walk in the park' for many. The course is often busy with couples walking the scenic tract. Seems a lot of people enjoy the league play as there are ladies leagues 3 days, evening leagues on 4 days, and a couples' league on Sunday afternoons that we have joined. Good course for good players, who enjoy the game.

"A great pitch-and-putt"
Although part of it will soon be bulldozed for a car dealership, I highly reccomend getting there while it's still a full 18 holes! Some holes are lacking in creativity, but quite a few give tricky shots over bunkers, mounded terrain, and alongside the Hockanum River. It's relatively affordable, and a fun way to kill an hour and a half or so.
