Conquistador Golf Course

This scenic course affords many wonderful views of the surrounding mesas. Water hazards (lakes and canals) come into play on six holes, plus the small greens are moderately undulating. The most difficult hole is #5, a 415-yard, par 4, featuring a sharp dogleg left fairway, lined by trees on both sides, and requiring an approach shot over water to its sloped green. Locals say the course is not unfair, but that a beginner might find it intimidating.

| With a decade between construction of the two seperate nines, this course is a time capsule in green construction and indirectly, golf course design philosophy. The front nine greens, built in '61, hug the land and were built by the son of a famous architect, Press Maxwell. Press's pa, Perry, is responsible for some great courses among them Prairie Dunes in Hutchinson Ks. Enjoyable, walking golf course at elevation, is a nice change from the cart path climbing monstosities built today. A tree removal program and recapturing some old fill pads, would make this hidden gem really shine. |
