Nice course but needs some help., Nov 28, 2004

The course has definetly improved over the past year with the new superintendent. But there is more room for improvement. He has done some nice work with the standing water that was around the course with new drainage. The greens are in nice condition, but would play much nicer if they would cut them down to compare to golf courses in our area (to slow). 10 years ago we had the fastest greens in the area. They need to train their personnel who cut the holes in the mornings, they seem to be in a hurry and the holes aren't deep enough. Built a beautiful new club house which I'm sure everyone will enjoy. Lets hope they take the same approach to the golf course. Need people to play with look for Buster, Tom, Charlie,Ron,Roger or Red, they'll guide you around the course.

I play here on a regular basis as a guest. The maintenance for the greens and fairways leave much to be desired. It is often better to purposely hit to the rough and avoid playing out of the poor fairways. Holes are very far apart so a cart is recommended, even though the yardage is short, the walk between holes is not. However, on the up side, the new bermuda grass should prove to be a vast improvement once it gets all grown in.

Hillcrest Golf Club
"Shape your game"
I grew up the area playing this course weekly for many years.I shaped my game at this little gem. Sixteen years later I play golf in Austin and work with a team of middle school golfers. As for Hilcrest...The first 3 holes are par 3s.(W/9,5/6, W/SW) They added some water to number one and moved the tee years ago. It puts a whole new spin on number one. People are less likely to hit the cars in the parking lot and/or Mr. Wilson's house too. Huge pines could save your ball from a feild(now the driving range) on the left if you are hooker.People teeing off on number eight and on 7's green also come in to play for some bad slicers. Three had a huge Oak that came into play for high wedges coming in from the left side. Water fountain at 4 was nice In July and august. Number 4 is a ~310yard par 4. Little ditch running accross about 270? made many people lay-up. Eagleable on many days. Another par 3 follows a treeline for Hole 5 and then my favorite par 4 is next. Over a wide lake...that eats up every bad slice for righties. Another eagleable ~300yarder. The lake has nice size bass in it too. Seven is the only par 5, a dogleg to the right. Eight is a par 4 with a huge ditch eating drives by the minute. And we end with a par 4, left dogleg that is reachable with a crush over the corner. Lights added make night golf fun! Drving range is huge so you have plenty of swing room.

Excellent small town nine hole golf course. Very challenging if you stray out of the fairway. Very much improved in last 2 years. A MUST if you are in the area.

"Great little secret in Central PA"
This is a very hilly course that is not too long. The greens are small and will yield many 3 putts if you are in the wrong spot. There are a lot of risk reward holes to make birdies or double bogeys. With small fast greens and the hilly terain, anything around par is a great score the average player with a 14 handicap should expect to play around 83 golf. Well maintaned golf course, good food and service in the dinning room. The pro shop staff is very professional and accomidating. The best thing is the cheap cart(highly reccomend to take one) and green fees less then $40 a player. This is my second favorite thing to do on a Penn State football weekend, of course the Nittany Lions are the first thing.

"Nice change of pace"
This course is a nice change of pace. I have played it every year for the last 5 years for a total of about 15 rounds. The water was way down for a few years and when it was the course was not very nice to look at. Greens are small and challenging. The course is fun to play and reasonably tough. Having a sand trap in the middle of a green is flat out stupid. That hole (# 15) is definately my least favorite hole. The par five # 14 along the road seems to always be in bad shape. Outside of holes #4 , #14 and #15 I like the course .
