This course features rolling terrain, a meandering creek, plus tree-lined fairways that afford generous landing areas. Founded in 1892, this club was listed by the USGA as one of the first 100 clubs established in the U.S. and the original site of the Chicago Golf Club. In addition, "GOLF Magazine" recognized it in their 1995 list of "The First 100 Clubs in America." Tee times are only reserved for weekends and holidays. David Gill redesigned three holes in 1976, and it was redesigned again by Steven Halberg in 1992 for its centennial celebration.

A Walk Through History, Sep 08, 2008 |

| I guess I lucked out playing this course on a cloudy day after a huge rainstorm the day before. It was not crowded and I finished my round in about 2 hours. The starter said you needed to survive the first 2 holes, both long par-4s and he was right. I started out 3 over and finished the next 7 holes at 1 under. I loved the design, which makes you think on about every tee box as to where you should place your shot. I probably would have benefited by playing with someone who’s experienced the course before. For instance, I will hopefully avoid the water on the difficult #2 hole, a par 4 of 416 yards next time I play it. There are lots of mature trees on the course but not ridiculously close to the fairway to make it unfair. There are not many bunkers either. It's easy to walk this course and imagine a time, long ago, when C.B. Macdonald developed this land. Although it’s been redesigned a couple of times, you can see his influence in the lines and angles of each hole. It's a beautiful walk through history and as close as many of us will get to playing its predecessor, the famous Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton. My only complaint was the slow speed of the greens, but given its municipal nature it probably stays that way most of the time to improve playability. Unfortunately, 9-hole courses are not as much in vogue these days but this is definitely one of my new favorites. Of course this "walk through history" makes you wonder about the lost 9 holes that were plowed under long ago. I guess it's just best left to imagination. |

A true classic, Apr 24, 2005 |

| This 9 hole course does play EXTREMELY slow. If you want to play and enjoy yourself, try to find a time when it isn't busy. That being said, it really does feel like a course that was built in the 1800s. For most golfers, this might be the only time in their lives that they play a course built in the 1800s. I absolutely recommend playing here. The holes are quite different than holes are nowadays, and if you really take the time to appreciate the course (and aren't frustrated by the slow play) , you'll realize you're playing a classic. |

As far as 9-hole tracks go..., Jun 14, 2004 |

| ...this one's tough to beat. Beautiful scenery and alot of history. The three first holes, all medium to long par 4's, pose a good starting challenge, followed by a couple shorter par 4's. The last hole provides an opportunity to pick up a stroke if you have a long straight drive in your bag and can make it to the top of the hill. |

Bring an MRE, May 05, 2004 |

| The only way to play this challenging and charming 9-hole municipal course in less than 3 hours is to be the first group off the tee. Seniors own the mornings, and kids slow down the weekends (my own among them). I have played this course over a dozen times, and I have to allow 4 hours to get through this death march. I suggest calling ahead to find out how slow the course is playing before going to the first tee. If you don't, better bring a meal. |
