This gently rolling course features elevated greens and tee boxes. The fairways are open, and water hazards come into play on four holes. The par 3's are the trickiest holes on the course. Byron Nelson shot a final-round course-record 65 to win the Durham Open here during his incredible streak in 1945 in which he won eleven consecutive tournaments.

HVCC is a Donald Ross Masterpiece, May 27, 2004 |

| From the beautiful slate terrace of the Club, one can look out and see the natural beauty of the Donald Ross designed course. Once on the course, this natural beauty turns into a beast. With the exception of a few holes (3, 4, 11, 12, 16), HVCC is relatively easy tee to green. It is when you arrive on the green that your putting skills and mental toughness are challenged. These magnificent (and recently renovated) greens with classic Ross false fronts, back to front or inverted saucer slopes, and subtle breaks seemingly everywhere around the hole provide you with plentiful mental anguish from three or more putting. If you have the opportunity to be in the Durham area and can arrange a round on this jewel, it will be an unforgettable golfing experience. |
