The most recently built greens on this course are very large, while the older greens are small. There are five ponds that come into play on six holes. The fairways are mostly flat, but there are a few mounds that can cause uneven lies. With the exception of hole #4, all the greens are well bunkered. There are two fairway bunkers located on hole #16, a 377-yard, par 4. There are discounted rates for groups of twenty or more available through the pro shop. Tee time reservations, for any size group, are made one day in advance.

This course is not to be compared with upscale courses with large memberships and seemingly unlimited budgets. But, for the price you pay for playing, this is a really good experience. The course is short by many standards, but it is challanging. The small greens on the front side make up for the shortness of a few holes. Incidentally, the front nine has been completely rennovated and will open Labor Day weekend. The front nine is wooded while the back nine is more open with several water holes. Try it for a great experience.

"Bring your control game"
Accuracy off the tee is more important than length as the fairways are lined with colorful trees. The small greens are surrounded by well-placed bunkers and then the real fun begins. The greens are fast, unless you have a downhill putt and then they are super-fast. Since the greens are so true, there are plenty of opportunities for one-putts, but also three-putts due to speed and breaks. Relaxed social atmosphere of club makes for a fun day. Pros, lead by Danny Mulhearn, are terrific golfers and teachers.

San Jose Country Club
"Delightful Donald Ross Challange"
This private course was designed by Donald Ross to be a resort course in the early twentieth century. It was purchased after World War II by locals and formed into a club known as San Jose Golf and Country Club and has been sucessfully maintained as the private club since. It is the home course to many prominent Jacksonville residents. One must be a member or guest to play. It is a par 72. The greens are all adjacent to the tees, so that it can be walked easily. There are water hazards sprinkled throughout the course, which make it a dangerous layout for errant shots. The moderately fast greens are well maintained Burmuda and are sometimes puzzling with rolling configuration. A mature course--kept in excellent shape year-round.

Peninsula Golf & Racquet Club - Lakes/Cypress Course
"Great Course"
This course meets all of my requirements of a great course. Its challenges you with long par 4s, and exciting par 3s. It also gives you a great view of the atlantic ocean. This course is ranked as one of my favorites to play.
