• Sleepy Hollow Country Club - Eighteen Hole Course
  "High Quality Private Club"
  As a Brit abroad, I was lucky enough to receive a couple of invitations to play here. The whole experience was outstanding, from the service at the club to the course itself. The clubhouse is one of the more impressive around (probably only improved upon by my home course in the UK!). The track itself was in excellent condition and, as with other Tillinghast courses, was a good strategic challenge, although not as 'man-sized' as say Winged Foot West and Bethpage Black. More playable for someone of my ability and therefore perhaps as enjoyable.

• Riverton Golf Club
  "Great value/tough holes"
  This course starts with the hardest starting hole in the Rochester area. Dogleg par 5 with Genesee River on the left the entire way. Second hole is a tough par 4 with bunkers in front of the green. Water comes into play on 5 holes. Greens and fairway are normally in great condition. It's a 9 holer, but for a good challenge at a nice price, you can't beat Riverton. I now live in AZ and refuse to pay what they want for a round out here.

• Savannah Golf Club, The
  "Deceptively Challenging"
  Although relatively short in length, the Savannah Golf Club is a typical Donald Ross design in that it demands use of all clubs in your bag and the ability to shape shots. The greens are generally small, slope up from front to rear, and can be very slick. Shots ending above the hole can easily turn into 3-putts. All of the par-5's are reachable in two shots to low-handicap, long hitters, but more birdies on these holes generally result from well-placed 1st and 2nd shots and agressive 3rd shot sand wedges. Holes 1, 2, 4, and 6 are demanding par-4's that most good golfers are happy to score par on. There is only 1 par-5 on the front and 3 on the back, and the par-4's on the back are also less demanding, making the inward 9 at least 3 or 4 strokes easier than the front side. Low-handicappers can expect a minimum of 4 or 5 birdies in a good round, but bogies and double-bogies can sneak up and bite you on even the most seemingly benign holes. Finally, there are many good players and the members here can expect to play their round in less than 4 hours.

  "A great pitch-and-putt"
  Although part of it will soon be bulldozed for a car dealership, I highly reccomend getting there while it's still a full 18 holes! Some holes are lacking in creativity, but quite a few give tricky shots over bunkers, mounded terrain, and alongside the Hockanum River. It's relatively affordable, and a fun way to kill an hour and a half or so.
