This is a unique golf course for Indiana. There are water hazards that come into play on thirteen holes. The wetlands come into play all over the course. The medium-sized greens are undulating, elevated, and some are lower in elevation than the fairways. The course is heavily wooded in some parts and supports wildlife including white tail deer, hawk, beaver, coyote, fox, minks and squirrels. There are more than seventy white sand bunkers incorporated into the course design.

| the thing i like about this course is the fact that every hole has a different look to it . all hazards are visable from just about anywhere . the greens are contoured such that you need to be familiar with them in order to know where to approach them from . the course has a high slope rating which is very justified given the challenge of some of the long second shots and the challenging greens . the course is starting to have a different look to it with recent housing development , but given the setbacks it should still have the right feel to it for a top notch designer course . only objection i have is that the greens tend to get a little bumpy in mid season due to members and guests not being diligent in ball mark repair . |

| I should disclose upfront that I am a member of The Hawthorns. It is a fantastic layout, and one of Arthur Hills best designs. It has hosted USGA open qualifications, and national tournaments such as The Women's Western Golf Association Amatuer Championship. In 2005, it will host the PGA's Northern Regional Club Professional Championship. It is a prarie style golf course which makes it unique in Indiana, and is an excellent strategic golf course that you have to think your way around. At 10 years of age, the course is maturing nicely; we also just had Arthur Hills in to do a few tweaks to the course, including a few new tee complexes, sand bunkers, and adding or extending a few of our lakes. It is a fun course to play, just make sure you play the right set of tees for your skill level. |
