This executive course gets a majority of its business from ladies, and its pro shop exclusively sells ladies' apparel and accessories. The family-operated course is well-liked for its picturesque country setting and well-maintained greens and fairways. The greens are undulating and the fairways are wide open and lined with spruce trees. Water hazards come into play on three holes. Hole #5, 195-yard, par 4, requires a tee shot over a pond. The men hit off the same tees as the ladies.

beautiful bargain executive course, Sep 18, 2005

This is a stunning course for the money. There are beautiful vistas of hills, farmland and a pond. Hilly terrain and undulating greens make it a lovely practice course. You'll get lots of practice with your short game and will have to deal with uphill and downhill lies. The holes are pretty straightforward with one exception. Hole 5 is pretty but lacks a decent landing area--it's difficult if not impossible to get the ball to stick on the sloping green. Aim for the fairway and let the ball run to the green. The couple who own and run the place are fantastic, and work hard to keep the place well maintained. In the summer they host lots of leagues, so it's worth calling in advance to make sure that you'll be able to play. During non-league times, you can often have the course to yourself. In summary, this course isn't a country club; it's a rural mom and pop operation. But the setting and the price make it a great practice course. It's a 4 or 5 for this type of course.

Commonwealth National Golf Club
"Great track"
I love this course. Have probably played it as a guest about 8 times and every time I'm done, I can't wait to get back. Played it 2x last summer ('03), when there was a lot of rain out East, and despite that, still enjoyed it. Fairways are among the best conditioned I've ever seen. Greens are in great shape-- and not too big, so you get a lot of makeable putts, but there are a lot of subtleties to them. As for the layout, get your pars and birdies on the front 9 because the back is brutal. One is a straight out Par 5 and you think "this isn't too bad". Get off the tee straight on two. Four is a very good hole. 6 is a sneaky tough par4 dogleg left, and nine is a 450 yard par 4 (blue tees) that gets you geared up for the back. Not a bad hole on the back nine, plus it takes you out of the holes that wind through office buildings and puts you into wetlands. A lot of carry. Par 10-12 and you are ready for 13, a long par 4 with a 2nd shot carry to a green that is impossible to it and impossible to putt. The member I play with is a 5 handicap and he always says--"take your bogey and smile". 14-17 are no gimmes and 18 is a par 4 that demands a 250 yard tee shot, but this leaves you a 170-200 yard uphill approach from a downhill lie to a green that has more break than any other on the course. Clubhouse is nice, but doesn't seem big enough. I've been there on Summer Friday's and it always seems like they need more space. Food is awesome though.

Woodcrest Country Club
"Woodcrest Country Club"
Woodcrest Country Club is not a long hitters course, but rather accuracy is rewarded. Woodcrest is famous for its rough, so keeping it in the Fairway is the play. Greens are smaller than the nouveau courses, but not the undulating and overly tricky type either. My friends who are low handicappers tell me that the course is tough but fair, and conservative play is best. Higher handicappers like me know the value of course management here.
