Deceptively Tough, Feb 02, 2007

At first glance, golf at the Flushing Valley G&CC, would seem to be relatively straight forward. The score card would lend one to believe that the course could be easily tamed, not having much length and playing to a par of 71. (slope 126) The course is uncluttered and senic with many holes along and two crossing the Flint River. The difficulty, and where this course "bares it's teeth" would be the greens. Though not heavily trapped, the putting surfaces are small and very fast, with two in particular, (10 & 11) being deceptivly constructed. (I won't give it away here.) Playing approach shots above most pin locations will lead to many interesting putts requiring exceptional mechanics and a steady nerve. Not a long course, the Par 5's are very reachable. The par 3's on the otherhand are not "pitch and putt". Very walkable. An "old style" course built before the "real estate development" courses mandated the use of carts. During the "wet season" the course can be a bit sloppy. Overall a good test of one's game. Definitly worth an invitation.

Tha't what it takes to score well on this course. While there are a few places where you can recover from a shot out to the right, for the most part you must stay on the fairway and hit the tiny greens to score well here.
