This course features some open fairways and some tree-lined fairways. The many changes in elevation from tee to green will cause uneven lies. Since there is a scenic creek coming into play on eight holes, plus ponds in play on two others, the average golfer must be precise with his shots. The signature hole is #6, a 416-yard, downhill par 4, requiring a tee shot that moves from left to right, then an approach shot to a crowned green.

The greens are worth the visit, Mar 14, 2004

This is an Elk's Lodge golf course and as such would certainly be easy to overlook, but that would be a mistake. I have lived in the area a long time and never played the course until a local tournament ended up there. While it is for the most part a straight forward course with not a lot of trouble, an errant driver for the day can make it an unpleasant experience as the course can play long and these are not greens you want to be trying to get up and down on all day. The greens alone, however, are worth the trip as they are the truest greens in the area in my opinion. They are quick but fair and will reward a good short game while severely punishing a poor one. One piece of advice is to bring your driver and hit it...often.

"Worth the trip"
This course is easily the best course I have played. It's on a par with Blackwolf Run and the other Kohler courses at a fraction of the price. This course has a spectacular setting. It winds up and around Iron Mountain, and is a marvel of course design. Despite the elevation changes, only one hole plays uphill. The holes are cut out of the mountain side and winding cart paths take you to the next level, and hole, until you reach numbers 9 and 17, both of which play straight downhill (as does 18, a 600 yard par five with 3 terraced fairways). The grooming is immaculate and each hole is separated from the others by woods or water. Even on a busy day it feels like you're the only golfers on the course. The staff is friendly and efficient and the course is nicely rangered. As you play the course, you will marvel both at the quality of the experience and the incredible engineering required during construction. Rates have been in the $50-60 range for the past several years and its the best golf bargain you can find. This is a course you could play every day and it would remain interesting. The fairways and greens compare with any PGA site. This is one not to miss.

"Great course for the aveage golfer"
This is a first rate facility for any golfer. A great putting green and practice area. The course is an intersting yet very playable for the average golfer and a challange from the tips for the better player. Good tee shots are a must. You can get into trouble with an errant tee shot on some of the holes. The greens are interesting. Some are multi layered and were in great condition the last time I played there.

"A great round of golf"
Course was in great shape. Challenging layout. Greens very undulating but consistent. Denim NOT allowed as it says above!! Pro shop staff and starter were courteous and friendly and helpful to first time players. Food and beverage is a snack bar NOT a restaurant. Close enough to Charleston , if you stay near the course all of the things Charelston has to offer and there are many are only one-half hour away
