This course was built on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan and Crystal Lake. The tree-lined fairways are extremely hilly, so expect many uneven lies. One small pond comes into play on hole #8, a 550-yard, par 5. In 1991, the club hosted a Senior Amateur Event Tournament. "Golf Digest" rated this course 13th best out of "America's 100 Greatest Courses" for 1995-96, and 18th best for 1997-98. The same publication rated it the 2nd "Best in State" course for the years 1995 through 1998. In addition, "GOLFWEEK" awarded it 4th in the category of "America's Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 5th in 1998 and 7th in 1999. "GOLF Magazine" rated it 8th among the "Top 100 Courses in the U.S." for 1995 and 1997, and 11th in 1999. Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva redesigned the course in 1985.

Golfable Golf Quote of the Day:
" A game in which you claim the privileges of age, and retain the playthings of childhood. -- Author Unknown, plagiarized from the Samuel Johnson quotation "It is a hopeless endeavour to unite the contrarieties of spring and winter; it is unjust to claim the priveleges of age, and retain the play-things of childhood." (Thank you, Frank Lynch. "
