Best Private Club Bargain in Chicago Area, Aug 09, 2004 |
| reviewer: Dick Conrad
from Chicago, IL |
| Woodmar Country Club, established in 1925 and redesigned (slightly) in 1982, is a traditional layout with mature trees, true greens, impeccable fairways and plenty of water, sand, elevation changes and doglegs to challenge every skill level. The scorecard shows total yardage from the tips at a little under 6600 yards, Par 72. But that is very deceptive. The members often refer to Woodmar as "the longest 'short' course in Chicagoland." The course design cleverly incorporates 2 holes at each par level that are short-but-oh-so-tricky and difficult. Bring all your clubs -- you'll need them! In addition to its championship 18 hole course, Woodmar Country Club features the full compliment of dining facilities (with great food!), swimming pool, tennis courts, driving range and two practice putting greens. For any golfer who plays twice a week during Chicago's summer golf season (and once or twice a month in early Spring and late Fall), membership in this private club is financially the best golf deal in the Midwest compared not only to other private clubs, but also to most first-class public and resort venues. Woodmar's pro shop is moderately stocked, but if you don't see what you're looking for, it can be ordered. The club pro and his assistant are affable and excellent teachers. If you love golf and don't want to take all day to play, or if you always wanted the convenience, quality and ambience of a private club (but didn't think you could afford it), look no further than Woodmar Country Club. It's location right off I-80/94 and Indianapolis Blvd. in Hammond is just 25 minutes from the Loop, Beverly Hills or Tinley Park. |
