commonwealth is one of the best i have ever played... started off with a nice and easy par 5 reachable by long hitters and you think to yourself that it is not a hard course until you get past the first three holes and your looking down the fourth fairway, you have a water on your left and bunkers on the right and then you realize what you got yourself into, par on number 4 is a great score, and 6 is a great hole dogleg left par 4 with water on the right on your approach shot. and number 9 is just one of those holes you get your bogey and move on. the back nine is where you give up all your strokes from the long par 4 13th with the second shot of a carry from anywhere from 170 to 220 yards over water. and the last and finishing hole number 18 gets every golfer every time, par on that hole will make the round.

You'll wish you could join, Jul 17, 2005

5th time playing Commonwealth last week and came away wishing I had the coin to be a member. I LOVE this course. No pretense to the club and/or it's members and not a lot of BS in the holes. Just play golf. Conditions are pefect. Fairways are immaculate, greens are smooth (fast but not scary intimidating,) and rough will cost you 1/2 a shot. Front nine is fun. Kind of warms you up as you go along. Makes you hit shots to spots which is a great skill to have as you go to the back 9. I am a long hitter, (8 handicap) but find that when I play here, I have to dial it back just a bit, especially on the back. The holes are straightforward without a lot of trickeration. Hit a good shot and you'll be fine. Miss one and double bogey is staring you in the face. Favorite holes are 4, 6, 9, 13, 14 and 15. 18 kills me every time, but my member friend says it kills everbody. Have played most of the top notch privates in the area and if I were to join a club to play everyday, his would be the one.

Challenging and fun, Aug 05, 2004

It is fairly tight, not a lot of room for error but if you can keep it in the fairway it is a great experience. There is a lot of diversity on the course (doglegs, island greens, long par fours etc). Greens are hard to read but big and fair.

WOW!!!, May 15, 2004
reviewer: Scott from Northeast Philly
Played here in mid-May. Had heard a lot of great things about Commonwealth and had really high expectations but this went beyond them! This is a golfers club. No pool or tennis. It is about GOLF. Three things: 1) The conditions are incredible! The fairways are PERFECT. And the greens are fast and true. The rough is thick and will cost you. 2) Great layout. The front 9 is good, The back 9 is GREAT! It will wear you down. It is station-to-station golf, and you have to hit good shots, or you will get penalized. We played the blue tees and the wind was up a bit, making it even tougher. I'm a low double digit, but would be a high double digit if I played here every day. The only downside is the airbase right next dor, but there wasn't too much noise. The member said that after the first few rounds, you don't even think about it anymore. 3) The dinner/food/service was great. If you get a chance to play it, HURRY! It is great!

Great track, Feb 08, 2004

I love this course. Have probably played it as a guest about 8 times and every time I'm done, I can't wait to get back. Played it 2x last summer ('03), when there was a lot of rain out East, and despite that, still enjoyed it. Fairways are among the best conditioned I've ever seen. Greens are in great shape-- and not too big, so you get a lot of makeable putts, but there are a lot of subtleties to them. As for the layout, get your pars and birdies on the front 9 because the back is brutal. One is a straight out Par 5 and you think "this isn't too bad". Get off the tee straight on two. Four is a very good hole. 6 is a sneaky tough par4 dogleg left, and nine is a 450 yard par 4 (blue tees) that gets you geared up for the back. Not a bad hole on the back nine, plus it takes you out of the holes that wind through office buildings and puts you into wetlands. A lot of carry. Par 10-12 and you are ready for 13, a long par 4 with a 2nd shot carry to a green that is impossible to it and impossible to putt. The member I play with is a 5 handicap and he always says--"take your bogey and smile". 14-17 are no gimmes and 18 is a par 4 that demands a 250 yard tee shot, but this leaves you a 170-200 yard uphill approach from a downhill lie to a green that has more break than any other on the course. Clubhouse is nice, but doesn't seem big enough. I've been there on Summer Friday's and it always seems like they need more space. Food is awesome though.
