i played this golf course just last week and have been back twice already it really is a hidden gem you can play at your own pace cos theres one one there and god knows why cos its beutiful. the only thing thats bad is the fairways , but the greens are incredibly, they really take good care of them, i think i saw two divit marks in my hole round. the best thing about this course for me was the elevation changes and beutiful views i know the bayou river isnt the cleanest in the word but theres somthing about this course that just has incredible class, maybe its the way that every hole is completly different from the last, i'm fed up of seeing flat long staight par 4 fairways that u can only reach in two if u put ur back out. i'm going to be goin to this course for a long time.

Wortham is not your average course. Without fail you will have at least two people approach you while playing to ask if you want to buy used balls. The price is the "hook" at Wortham, it is cheap, but you do get what you pay for. For the most part the course is in good condition for a $25 dollar course with the exception of the greens. There seems to always be a problem, whether it is sanding or sprinklers watering the green while you putt (they turned on while I was on the green on two holes when I was there last) and the course has two temporary greens set up, which are a joke. The temps are a 15 foot wide (if that) shortly mowed part of the fairway 30 yards in front of the original green. All in all, if you are looking to just play some where cheap it is a fair course for the money.

good and getting better, Oct 28, 2004 |

Gus Wortham GC went into a tailspin from mismanagement 2 years ago but the city took it back in 2003 and the old place is really picking up. 2 new greens and 2 new tees, grass and trees are cut, new sand in bunkers, irrigation fixed... Management is trying hard to win back customers and dropped green fees while the temporary greens are in. Now it is a 3 star and gaining maybe half a star a year. What I like best about Gus is the layout. It is a course you can play every week and not get tired of it. 14, 15 and 16 are kind of boring but all the rest have interesting features. Very good walking course. Gus has all the practice facilities, a cafe and an excellent pro. The price is amazingly low considering it is only 3 miles from downtown, maybe because the neighborhood is not that good. Except for weekend mornings it is easy to walk on.

Only 3 miles from downtown, this course used to be the Houston CC. It was allowed to decay and then in 2003 the City took it back and has been upgrading it ever since. Unfortunately many fairways still have weeds in them, three greens are in desperate shape and the bayou that meanders through is nasty. But every month the course looks better. My guess is it will be back to 100% in 2006. The layout is excellent. The course has a good variety of holes without being quirky, except maybe the 247 yd par 3 16th. Only 6,100 yards from the blues but I usually score the same as at Houston Memorial, which is 6,600. One of the culprits is three consecutive par 5's all with OB to the right. It is an old-fashioned course, easy walking ($16.50 on weekends). It has all the practice facilities, excellent cheeseburgers and the weekend beer cart girls come from nearby UofH. Ball resellers hang outside the fence and you can almost get your greens fees back with good deals on used balls. The pro there excellent. Gus can be tough to get on Saturday morning but for the most part word of the improvements has not gotten out and you can walk right on.
