This is one of the top-rated golf facilities in the San Diego area. It offers two regulation eighteen hole courses. The designs of these courses are similar to Pebble Beach. The South Course is longer and more difficult, while the North Course is more scenic. The fairways on both courses are somewhat tight and lined with deep rough. The fast greens are medium-sized. Both courses host the PGA Tour's Buick Invitational of California each February. "GOLF Magazine" even selected it to their 1998 list of "Top 10 PGA Courses You Can Play." "Golf Digest" rated the South Course as the 8th "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996, and the same publication rated it as the 16th "Best in State" course for 1997-98. "GOLF Magazine" rated the South Course 93rd best under the 1998 category of "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." The North Course was selected 74th among the "Top 75 Public Courses" for 1990 by "Golf Digest." David Rainville redesigned both courses in 1975, followed by Stephen Halsey and Jack Daray, Jr. in 1988. There are special green fee rates available for San Diego County residents. Tee time reservations can be made through the City of San Diego's Golf Course Reservation System by calling (619) 570-1234.

|I have played the North Course a couple of times, and I never get tired of it. What else can you say about Torrey Pines other than it is a true treasure of American golf. If you want to know about the layout of the course, consult your latest version of Tiger Woods PGA Tour Golf on your computer. Nuff said. As a San Diego newbie, I will give you tourists a word of advice. Make your tee times directly if possible. Torrey Pines is a tough place to get a tee time, but not impossible. Save your money and do it yourself, and you can save serious cash. On the other hand, if you have disposable cash and can pay a Reservation Company to handle it for you, so be it. As a SD resident, this course costs me about $20, but I would pay $100. One last thing: As great as the course is, there is something of a myth about how crowded it can be. I have met more San Diego golfers (and we're talking serious golfers who have lived in San Diego for a while) who have NEVER played either TP course. So, don't be discouraged and get a tee time.|
