Lakemoor Golf Course

450 Sullivan Lake Rd
Lakemoor, IL 60050
Phone: (815)759-0597Fax: (815)759-0598

This course, located in northern Illinois, was designed to be friendly for all levels. With wide fairways and slow greens, a golfer will be able to concentrate on technique and style. Although there are fourteen water hazards and thirty-eight bunkers that come into play, for the most part, they stay out of the way and allow a golfer to play without fear; unless that golfer has a really bad slice. Hole #9 is the most difficult on this course. This 337-yard, par 4, plays over a 40-foot high hill and the fairway is a dogleg right with a pond on the right-hand side of the green.

Update from RT, Jul 06, 2006
reviewer: RT from NW IL from il
I wrote the review above roughly 3 years ago and haven't been back since, until last week. I needed a place to go with my wife (who is not good)so I decided Lakemore was the place. They are actually spending a liitle money on the place and have improved conditions on many of the holes. I was pleasantly surprized at how well some of the fairways looked. Real bent grass!!! Some of the tee boxes have also gotten resodded and although they are long (trying to let the grass come in) you can tell they are trying to do good things. The greens are much better, but about a 2 on the stimpmeter. Kudos to the course manager for number 16, the hole is spectacular. The course still has a way to go (bunker sand without rocks would be nice), but has improved markedly. It's still not as good as other equally priced courses in the area, but I would consider playing it again.

A Dog Track That Could Be A Beauty, Jun 10, 2004
reviewer: DogTrack Master from Illinois
Lakemoor Golf Club reminds of the executive assistant with horned rim glasses and a hair bun. With a little bit of makeup, a pair of contacts, and a salon cut she could be transformed into a knockout. In the case of Lakemoor, truckloads of dirt, bent grass fairways, reshaped bunkers, and wholesale hole re-routing could turn this into a masterpiece. On the positive side, this course has a lot of water and O.B. comes into play on almost every hole. The problem with this course is called conditioning. The fairways are hard to find, and the shaggy greens could use a good cut from Floyd the Barber. Highlights include #5, a tight par 5 with trouble down both sides. At only 520, a good drive provides you with the chance to get home in two. #8 routes you past a couple of sewage ponds, with a severe 90 degree turn to the right. #9 finishes with an elevated tee box to a sweeping dogleg right around a pond. Play to the left and this hole is not that hard. #10 opens the back nine with a solid, long par 4 test of 460 yards. I went long and left and found water. #11 is a tight par 4 with water down the right and left, and #12 is a 178 yard knee-knocker to a green surrounded by water. Crossing a culvert help me understand why my friend dubbed this the "Appalachian 9". As you pass by the trailers on the right, you suddenly seemed transformed to Kentucky or Arkansas and wait with baited breath to hear hound dogs on the trail of possum. Holes 13-15 are quite unmemorable, other than the "double wide" views. However, the tee box at 16 begins what I call "Appalachian Amen Corner". Your tee shot on this par 5 541 yard gem must carry about 220 over water (which is no small feat!). However, you must also avoid O.B. trouble to the left and water to the right. Lay-up to about 120 to avoid the water and you might have a chance at birdie. 17 is a peninsula green and plays tougher than the 158 yards might suggest. Finally, #18 presents water down the right side and O.B. to the left. Stray to far left and your stymied from going for the green. A great 422 yard finisher. We played this course in soggy conditions and it's probably the worst shape I've ever seen from a drainage standpoint. This is a course that could be great, but unfortunately is not due to poor maintenance and some bad routing. Even a Dog Track Master like me had trouble taming this hound dog.

Play it eary in spring before the ground gets hard., Apr 13, 2004
reviewer: RT from NW IL
Well, you get what you pay for. This course is really in rough shape, the fairways (????) are bad and the greens are not much better. What you do get is a course that you can usually always get out on and one that demands accuracy off many of the tees. If memory serves correctly there is OB on nearly all of the holes. The par 5, 5th is especially difficult with OB right and water left almost the entire length of the hole. The 17th par 3 is basically a penisula green that can be intimidating. To finish the 18th is not a particullarly long par 4 but extreemly narrow with water going up the entire right side and OB left. It is a shame they do not put some $$$$ in to this course, the layout is really nice.
