This club has four eighteen hole courses. The Dubsdread Course was built from the natural terrain and is known for its many oak trees lining the fairways and its large, undulating greens. The signature hole on Dubsdread is #16, a 397-yard, par 4, with a dogleg left fairway and great views of the countryside. Its green is four-tiered and surrounded by trees. "Golf Digest" rated Dubsdread as the "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996, and "GOLF Magazine" chose this 16th among the "Top 100 Courses You Can Play in the U.S." for 1998. In the category of "America's 100 Greatest Courses," "Golf Digest" ranked it 59th for 1995-96, and 54th for 1997-98. "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 16th in the category of "America's 100 Best Modern Courses" for 1997, 27th for 1998 and 29th for 1999. The #2 Course was also built out of the natural terrain. It does not have the championship design of the Dubsdread Course, but it is challenging just the same. The greens are average-sized and most of them have ravines in front of them. Water hazards (some ponds) come into play on three holes. The #1 and #3 courses share just about the same design. These courses are more open than the others, but somewhat longer in yardage. The terrain is not as undulating as the other courses, but there are a few rolling hills that can affect your lies. Joe Lee and Dick Wilson redesigned the Dubsdread and #2 courses in 1963. Rocky Roquemore redesigned Dubsdread in 1990. The club annually hosts the PGA Tour's Motorola Western Open on the Dubsdread Course. The Western Open is the third oldest tournament in existence, just behind the British Open and the U.S. Open. The first Western Open was held in 1899. "GOLF Magazine" selected it to their list of "Top 10 PGA Courses You Can Play" in 1998. On the Dubsdread Course, a ninety-day advance reservation must be taken.

| I began playing this course in the mid-80s when it was a $35 bargain. It now gets over $100 a round, but it is worth the price to play one of the greatest courses in the Chicago area. The pros who play the Western Open here find it to be a fair test. The most difficult holes are #4, short par 4 with water and difficult green to hit. Hole #6 is a long par 3 with a tricky green and lots of bunkers. Hole #9 finishes the front nine. It is a three shot par 5, with lots of trees. On the back nine, #13 is a long par 4 with a ravine in front of the green. The green itself is long and narrow. Hole #16 is a picturesque hole with water down the left side and a tricky green. The course finishes with a long, difficult par 4. Beware of the pond on the left side. This is a course that forces you to put the ball in the air. The greens are well-bunkered and nearly impossible to run-up a shot on. This is a great course that you shouldn't pass up. |
