Great conditions for an easy test of golf, Apr 01, 2006

For those golfers who are just beginning, or those who are looking for the best conditions to play on when the temps soar in late summer, Riviera is for you. Although the course is short, and the greens pretty straightforward, the course fights back with the abundance of treelined fairways that are guaranteed to impede at least one shot from even the most accurate golfer. You will not find a course in better condition in this area, without paying upwards of 40 bucks, especially in late summer.

I've played many courses, in several states. None more fun than Riviera. I grew-up in Huntington, playing Riviera, two to three times a week for twenty years. I can remember the swishing sound of the glider-planes flying over holes number 11 and 12 while landing. Hitting old balls into the Ohio River on number 14 and 15. Moving rail cars have saved me many times from out-of-bounds on number 11. We named number 8 after my brother-in law, because he always thought he could cut the corner, but never could. (The Chadwell Hole) I remember when the trees were planted, the lake on number 9 grew, number 16 had a fairway, the mulberry tree on 17 tee, green fees were $1.50 weekdays and $3.00 on weekends. The best news is, I played Riviera a couple times last year, and it was in great shape. Anyone playing this course will enjoy the scenery, the clubhouse, parking, and the challenge.

"xtreme golfer"
I first played this course in the winter season and I was really impressed with the condition it was in. The fairways which are Bermuda were dormant, but very well maintained. The layout was quite challenging, especially the 2nd hole which required a nice fade over trees which would put you in position for a nice approach to an elevated green. For those without a fade in your bag, this hole would stretch your imagination and skill level to attempt to go for it in two. The remainder of the front-side consisted of two other dog-legs to the right which again would require a nice fade shot in order to reach in regulation. The finishing hole on the front side is fairly long, but straighforward - again another dog-leg to the right. On the back side, your course management skills are challenged very early on the second hole. From an elevated tee shot you can attempt a 240+ drive to an elevated fairway. If not executed properly, you can find your tee shot in the woods (left OB), in water (right and short). This hole requires good course management and disclipline. The remainder of backside plays either up or downhill with water coming into play on several of them. The greens are medium to large, but fair. Overall, I was challenged on this course and have considered joining this course in the the spring. Rates are very affordable.

"Pleasent Golf"
This is a fun course with just the right amount of challenge. Pretty with the lakes and trees It plays reasonably fast, about 2 hours. The greens could be a little better, but they don't burn out in the summer. Cost is reasonable for the area and condition.
