This very demanding course features a few water hazards and numerous sand bunkers incorporated into its design. The greens are large and difficult to read. The signature hole is #2, a 505-yard, par 5, requiring an uphill tee shot to a narrow landing area guarded by large oak trees, then two more uphill shots to the green. "Golf Digest" rated this as the 4th "Best in State" course for 1995-96, and the 5th best for 1997-98. In addition, "GOLFWEEK" ranked it 75th among "America's 100 Best Classical Courses" for 1997, 100th for 1998 and 97th for 1999. Several designers have done renovations over the years, most recently by Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva in 1979.

| Somerset is one of the most challenging courses in the state of Minnesota. There are no gimmicks nor are there any apparent obstacles. Greens are large and water is sparce. The course is not long and the fairways are ample. Sand can be easily avoided and the rough is manageable. This description posits the idea that the course is easy. However, the course beats even the best of golfers on and around the greens. A good drive and approach shot are at most a convenience on this course. The importance of controlled wedges and cagey putting is quickly apparent. Enjoy the old fashion mystique and don't be lulled by the courses appearance. |
