| I have been a native of central PA for numerous years until recently moving. I have played Shade Mountain numerous times and you will not find a better golf course for the price than Shade Mountain GC. The front nine is wide open, giving a false sense that you can just grip it and rip it. However trees are full grown and errant tee shots generally question you to lay up or make a big gamble. The back nine is a challenge for most golfers but a true test for the single digit handicapper. Beautiful tree lined holes allow many options off the tee. #11 is a great par 5 ~508 in distance tree lined the whole way but a big hitter can get home with 6 or 7 iron, but hitting the fairway is difficult. 13 is a great risk reward hole, only 314 in distance but a dogleg left requires a good draw to turn the corner to get there. The green is smaller and tucked ever so close to the left trees. A bail out right and you'll find trees. 4 iron is all you need to have wedge in but hitting this green in one is just too tempting. I've seen 3 wood land on this green before so big boys may not need driver. The closing hole is a 440 yeard dogleg right par 4 that is without a doubt the BEST finishing hole in all of central PA. Requires some guts to hit a cut shot into the fairway that slopes to the left. You better not hit a big draw or you'll be chipping out of teh left woods. Green is elevated and guarded by a steep sloped bunker on the right. PAR is an unbelievable score here. I've seen pros shoot 76 and I've seen a couple 65's so it's a course that you can score on if you keep the ball in play. |

| Shade mountain golf club offers a challange for golfers of all handicaps. The front nine is wide open with many oppertunities for birdies and par alike.High handicapers will enjoy the front nine because of all the openness. The back nine quickly catches your attention as a tight finish to your round.The back isn't nearly as open as the front and requires that you play a fairly strait ball.Lower handicapers will enjoy the back because it makes you think about your shot placement instead of just gripping and ripping. |

| I played this course on Thursday with some friends that live around the course. What a Great Experience. The adventure started with one of the most friendly and accommodating staffs I have ever met. They gave me advice on a couple of tricky holes. The practice facility was nice and a bucket of balls was very reasonable. It even had a chipping green with a practice bunker, neither of which I used but should have. The course itself was in excellent shape, green, full, fairways and rough and a clear distinction between the two. And a club house that had good food and cold beer that we could take onto the course. The front nine started with a short par 4 all down hill with a green that was open in the front. But the second hole was back up that hill and was a touch longer. The third was a par 3 that was cut out of the tress with the green just over a small creek. The fourth was a dogleg left par 4 and the fifth a par 5 that was open to the left and let you swing away. The sixth a par 4, the seventh a par 3, the eighth a par 4 and the ninth a par 5 all were nice holes with a good bit a openness allowing for some of my errant shots. At the turn we had a hot dog and refilled the cooler. The back nine was a bit tougher it had trees line almost every fairway. The fairways were generous however so it was not overly impossible to keep your ball in play. These holes were also a touch longer. I am not sure the card would show that, but they did play longer, except the par threes which were both in the 150 range with large greens. The 18th hole was a great finishing hole, long challenging par 4, open for the first 150 yards then trees lined both sides. There was a creek about 100 yards in front of the elavated green (and I mean elevated about 50 feet above the creek level). The green also had a huge deep bunker that guarded the right side. And even though I had a boogie I was able to win a skin on it and even up our match which we had to finish on the putting green. I would highly recommend this course if you are in the area and I would like to give it 5 stars, but those trees on the back nine not only cost me 3 strokes, but there are a lot of rocks in there and lets just say my 7 iron will never be the same. I will definitely go back, but when I am in the woods (notice I didn't say "if I am in the woods") I will feel around for hidden rocks better. Hope this helps. And if you go there enjoy and tell them the Maryland Mauler says hello, but I still think they owe me a 7 iron. |

| Front nine is easy...with a few interesting holes...namely 2, 3, 4, and 8...being the most challenging and interesting...the Back nine on the other hand is challenging and interesting from the onset...very tight(holes 10 and 11) in areas...cut right out of the mountain...with risk reward on 13...15 and 18 are very challenging par 4's from the tips...back nine is great!!! |
