This state-owned course often requires difficult approach shots. All the tees and greens are elevated. This course is even more difficult when the wind is blowing, particularly in the afternoons. The course was redesigned in the 1960's by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. "Golf Digest" rated this course as the 3rd "Best Public Course" in the state for 1996. In addition, "Golf Digest" rated this course 38th best under the category of "America's Top 75 Affordable Courses" in their 1996 list of "America's Best Golf Courses Everyone Can Play." In 1990, they ranked it 44th among the "Top 75 Public Courses."

Montauk is the 2nd Best Public Course - Next to the Black, May 24, 2005
reviewer: Ray C from Brooklyn
For the price there is nothing better. Only the Black offers the beauty and grace of this design. It would be the best LI public course in my mind except that it is at the end of the island. The good thing is that I have played there four times and never waited a minute. The course was in perfect shape, challenging and enjoyable. I am a 12 handicap and I can't wait to get there again!

Outstanding Public Track, Nov 28, 2004
reviewer: Jeff from west new york, NJ
This course is an outstanding public golf course and a true test of golf. When they brought the greens keeper from bethpage red Course, these greens have improved to the point that at times they are as good as any private course. Play it from the tips, it is a true test of golf. What makes this course great is the wind. It is a true ocean type course. With some of the new tee boxes, 440 yard par 4's can play like 500 yard holes. With new bunkers being put in on several holes, this course just got harder.
