Oakmont Country Club
"Tough but Fair"
Oakmont is a picturesque layout in the foothills of Glendale with lovely mountain views. The course is an old-style country club layout which rewards well planned out shotmaking. The greens are usually very fast and reward players for being below the hole. The Pac-10 Conference Championship was held at Oakmont in 2003 and only two players broke par (288) in a field of 50. The players found the par 3's particularly challenging. The greens are very well protected with sand bunkers and the fairways are heavily tree-lined. Best time to play Oakmont is in the spring and fall. I find the twelfth hole to be the most challenging. It is a 420 yard par four, uphill and terraced. The green is long and narrow, two-tiered and protected by a large bunker on the right and a drop-off hill and trees on the left.

North Shore Country Club
"Great Bay Side Holes, and Tough"
Play this in the wind and you'll find your handicap is a little too low. Northshore is a wonderful course with great bay views on the 4 bayside holes. And Don't miss the gator on hole 12, the cormorants on number 3, or all the other birds during the migratory months. In winter the rye overseed makes Northshore one of the best courses in all of South Texas.

Carolina Golf & Country Club
"Classic Donald Ross"
This course is short in yardage (6200), but plays much longer. One reason is that there are only 2 par 5's on a par 70 track. The par 3's are classic Ross. 3 of the 4 can play over 190 yards to postage stamp greens. There are a lot of down and up style par 4's, but there is also variety. Holes 10,11 and 18 are good examples of tough, well thought out par 4's that demand accuracy and thought. A four is an excellent score on all of these holes. The course is generally in excellent condition and has undergone some minor renovations. You will notice that the greens are exceptionally small, even for a Ross course. Greens are properly protected with bunkers and have just the right amount of undulation. One designer has stated that these are the smallest greens he has ever seen on a Ross course (which may be its claim of distinction among the many Ross courses). There is a premium on iron play and short game. Greens are quick, but not penal. Everyone thinks they can bring this course to its knees, but it usually is the other way around. The course can frustrate you if you expect too much too easily. This is what makes it such a wonderful place to experience the brilliance of Donald Ross. Forest Park Golf Course
"Short but Great"
Since the course renovation in 1997 the new layout is great. Management has spent a lot of time and money fixing it up. It is a short course but very tight so it isn't as easy as it may seem. It is one of the most beautiful courses in NYC.
